Mitt #1 is Finished!

Thanks for all of your comments on the mitts I'm making for Taylor. I'm really enjoying this project.

Over the weekend, I finished the first mitt. It has a point on the back of the hand, as was common on 18th century mitts. It can be folded back out of the way if you need your fingers totally free for work. I also didn't do anything special to the top bound off edge, so it does roll a bit. However, it's actually not rolling as much as I expected. I guess the 18th century habit of not using ribbing isn't that big a deal in this case. Now on to the second one!

That is really pretty. I'm impressed with the whole 18th century design inspiration.

looks great, glor. i like the point on the back of the hand. for some reason it seems very feminine to me. didn't they used to make dresses that had a loop slipped over the middle finger lead by that same pointed shape? sort of in the "my fair lady" era?

They're cool. I guess ribbing isn't that necessary.

This mitt looks really authentic--it's so impressive that you took the time to research how they were made back in the 18th century. I bet your friend will be tickled pink (and warm!)

Thank you all for your kind comments!

Beth, I have seen dresses like what you are talking about, but I'm not sure what period they are from. Maybe I can find one in some of my costuming books.
